The new photography of Jimi Billingsley.
A one year project that culminated in a 3 month, 12,000 mile road trip around the United Sates in the Summer of 2010.
Billingsley’s new work explores the formal and narrative possibilities of layers in photographs. Simultaneous inclusion of transparency, opacity, translucence, and reflection (in different combinations), creates rich complexities.
“With in a single frame I look to activate the eye (viewers perception) by creating a tension between the structure of the composition, specifically the architectural and formally geometric shapes that make up a kind of lattice substructure, and the gesture, often manifest in figurative reflections, text, graffiti, Plants(organic elements), decay, and other organic and contextual elements, that flesh out the story. The line between where these two sets meet, and how they interact to create an activated composition was a central focus of these experiments.”
