David McQueen’s installations represent larger environmental elements with elaborate and at times obsessively intricate mechanical systems. The work yields a strange and subtle effect of ominous harbingers. An expectant gust of wind manifests as a minor breeze and what should be a booming roll of thunder becomes a momentary shudder across one’s shoulders. For this show, these mechanical rumblings are projected onto a series of sprawling miniature landscapes. Icy snowstorms swirl across stark winter landscapes inside handmade snow-globes that dot the walls of the gallery. Hundreds of vibrating motors become a gathering storm threatening a vast cityscape of simple balsa houses. The buzzing and blowing of 600 miniature fans whisper across the gallery spilling secrets (perhaps threats) into the windows of houses on the opposite wall. Minor storms threatening tiny towns smaller rumblings for darker times.
