Bok exclusively paints the environs of his studio. His paintings stand as a record of time and space, the culmination of an abstract layering of fractured moments. A 2004 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship has allowed Bok a sabbatical from his teaching position at Hampshire College, during which time at various points he has maintained studio spaces in Brooklyn, New York and Portland and Rockland, Maine. This exhibition presents a selection of canvases from these three spaces. And while the interiors vary dramatically, Bok’s pursuit and execution throughout these paintings remains steadfast. In addition to the paintings, a panoramic print (hardground etching, aquatint, sugar lift, white ground, drypoint and burnishing) of the printing press room at the Wingate Studio in Hinsdale, New Hampshire will accompany the exhibition. Even in this medium, Bok succeeds in capturing the passing moments in his non-linear time-lapse fashion.

Accompanying Bok’s exhibition will be a catalogue, Gideon Bok: Time Fades Away, surveying the many studio interiors that Bok has depicted in his paintings.
