Smith-Stewart is pleased to present SHE WAS BORN TO MY UNICORN, a group exhibition curated by AMY KELLNER.

She Was Born to Be My Unicorn” was originally dreamed up as a response to a really cool group show that Bob Nickas curated at Team Gallery in 2003. It was called “My people were fair and had cum in their hair (but now they’re content to spray stars from your boughs),” which is a rather perverted play on the name of the 1968 album by Tyrannosaurus Rex. The show was all about sexual freedom and sexual energy and lots and lots of cute boys.

Kind of as a joke I went up to Bob at the opening and said, “Hey, I wanna do the flipside of you show from a girl’s perspective and call it `She Was Born To Be My Unicorn’” (which is also a T. Rex song from the 1969 album Unicorn). I was mostly kidding, but Bob thought it was a great idea and we tried to make it happen but it just sorta never did and I completely forgot about it.

Flash forward to four years later and Bob tells me, “Guess what? Amy Smith-Stewart is opening up a new gallery and I told her about your show idea and she’s really into it!” Of course now that so much time has gone by, my tastes and priorities have changed. Sexual liberation? Pfft, over it. But hey, I still like unicorns! So I start thinking about “girly” imagery: Kittens and hearts and rainbows and dreamy girls with long, flowy hair. Stuff that’s cute and ethereal and maybe kind of innocent. In a way it is the flipside of Bob’s show: Fantasy minus the sex.

So, yup, that’s what it is. A sweet lil’ summery group show for you to enjoy. Hope you like it!

xoxo, Amy K.
