For this exhibition, Director of Arts and Senior Curator Jennifer McGregor has invited three artists to develop special projects using texts by Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe as a departure point. Each project creates a distinct experience within a room of the gallery.

Allison Smith transforms what was once the living room of Glyndor House into a Civil War era period room, based on Mark Twain’s descriptions of his experiences as a confederate soldier. Simon Leung’s video project explores Poe’s popular and lesser known works, including “The Raven,” The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket and “The Black Cat”, and their use of parallels, secrets, doppelgangers and pre-Freudian psychology. Amy Yoes’ installation comprises a complex series of interlocking structures, part architecture, part furniture, that examines Poe’s essay “The Philosophy of Furniture” and his short story “William Wilson.”
