Liz Ainslie and Evan Reehl Ryer, Suspension

Spazio 522
526 West 26th Street, Suite 522
Chelsea
May 29 - August 15, 2008
Reception: Thursday, May 29, 6 - 8 PM

Both Liz Ainslie and Evan Reehl Ryer create pictures that suspend. These pictures utilize suspension in terms of physical space, as in the theory behind a suspended bridge, where tension and compression hold the form intact – or in terms of musical structure, where the prolongation of a tone in one chord into the following chord can produce a temporary dissonance.

Ainslie’s paintings aim to create an unquantifiable, or unknown place – to create a picture of the unrealized. She places shapes within a field that she describes as a “thick gel,” holding the composition in a force field of opposing or contrasting energies.

Ryer’s work relies on screens. Screens of color, texture and image. Through the layering of line, shape, and direct quotations of the material world, he layers together pictures that exist as frameworks for seeing ourselves.

Liz Ainslie lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and holds an M.F.A. in Painting from the Tyler School of Art. Evan Reehl Ryer lives and works in Brooklyn. Evan holds a B.F.A. in Painting from Tyler.

Julia Schwadron is a Brooklyn based artist, who is currently teaching as a Visiting Professor of Painting at the University of Iowa.
