chashama is pleased to announce the reopening of the 112 West 44th street gallery space with a solo exhibition featuring the work of artist, Danny Licul. No stranger to chashama, Licul will be presenting a range of new works with an opening reception on February 18.

Licul’s work explores themes of memory, fantasy and imagination. The body of work presented in the front gallery revolves around a memorable Christmas gift– a highly coveted Star Wars Millennium Falcon toy. To produce this new series of work, Licul recreated a model of his family’s living room from memory. Setting the scene with clay figures, and lighting the space from different angles, Licul created a tangible template to base his work off of. The resultant works map the transformation of desire fulfilled to life unhinged manifested, for Licul, by this toy’s resemblance to a deer ticks head and the Lyme Disease he later endured. Working with oil on canvas and mixed media on paper, Licul composes worlds of playful, vibrant color but rooted in the transformative nature of experience. The model will accompany this body of work. In the rear of the gallery, there will be a variety of other smaller paintings as well as works on paper.

chashama is a non-profit arts organization that has been supporting unrepresented artists since 1995. chashama provides opportunities for performing and visual artists by awarding grants, producing shows and providing studio, rehearsal and performance space.
