Angus Hood’s recent paintings will be on view at Heskin Contemporary from April 9th through May 16th, 2009. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, April 9th from 6-9 pm.

Whilst these works have a discreetly alluring quality as autonomous objects, they also have an intriguing resonance when seen in the context of Hood’s output thus far.

Although superficially a departure from his installations composed of interdependent, interchangeable, fragmented imagery, monochrome paintings and sculptural elements, these new paintings can be seen as a tangential riff on the same exploration of repetition, difference, threads, layers and articulation of space.

There is a recurring motif incised in the paintings – sometimes ovoid, sometimes less clearly defined. This doesn’t necessarily represent anything – but, of course, suggests many possibilities. Indeed some of the titles (given mainly for the purpose of identification rather than say, “Untitled”) seem to imply portrait or landscape subjects, pop/cultural references or code names, while others prosaically describe visual aspects of the paintings.

The artist received his BA with first class honors from the Edinburgh College of Art. He has also been the recipient of the Andrew Grant Traveling Scholarship and the Scottish Arts Council Visual Artists Award in 1999. Mr. Hood was born in Glasgow, Scotland and has exhibited throughout Scotland and Europe as well as the U.S. This is Mr. Hood’s first solo exhibition at Heskin Contemporary.
