Bankruptcy, bad service, constipation, obsession, food and of course, Kippi-
that is, Martin Kippenberger-are the ingredients of Jay Batlle’s “Cutting Out The Middleman” exhibition at Nyehaus Gallery. Kippi (if you don’t know who Kippi is, you are really going to miss a lot of the significance of the show) is the central figure of Jay’s current body of work. While purposely visually similar, the work also channels the spirit of M.K.’s wordplay, wit and urgency of gesture. But more than anything it has whet my appetite for the sumptuous pigs Jay and I are going to feast on with our tribe of friends on the eve of his opening.
