Eastern District Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Max Langhurst. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery.

For this exhibition Max Langhurst has created a series of light and video based installations. The title of the show refers to the historic theory which explains the structure of spacetime.

Langhurst’s recent work examines spatial unity through systematic organization. A sign system is representation through communication which in turn leads to a shared meaning or understanding. His neon structures are marked by his refusal of marketing elements and indicates to the viewer a willingness to identify with ones total environment. The work also references the stylings of cyberpunk films of the late 20th century. Dark motifs are contrasted with a single dominating neon color creating a visual effect commonly seen in the futuristic genre.

As part of his upcoming exhibition at Eastern District, the artist has created a video installation titled Mission Control which layers simulated data suggesting the illusion of an infinite experience. The gallery will also feature a wall relief rendered in light, plastic, and paint. The work, inspired in part by fragmentation, depicts a hand void of recognizable features. With its dislocated and familiar shape, the work reflects the way the body is divided up by an “imaginary anatomy. The concept of sequence is added to elaborate on shapes ability to calculate distance. The process of this mathematical preparation reflects a consistency observed in much of today’s modern, automated world.

Max Langhurst lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
