SAN FRANCISCO: The Making of a Queer Mecca a new exhibition of the early work of San Francisco’s most notorious queer photographer, Rink Foto. Friend and photographer of Harvey Milk, Robert Mapplethorpe and Andy Warhol, Rink seems to have a gift for being there at the right moment, not only to catch the action but also to capture the image that is rich enough, dense enough, and strange enough to tell a complex story without words. Curated by Julia Haas with the assistance of Jonathan David Katz, this exhibition is comprised of but a fraction of Rink’s near half-million photographs chronicling the transformation of San Francisco into the epicenter of the gay and lesbian movement in the 1970s. The exhibition will also feature several rarely-seen photographs taken by Harvey Milk.
