Ashley Prine’s vivid oil & alkyd paintings mediate between representational macrocosms and abstract microcosms. The multi-layered compositions depict expansive landscapes replete with an array of flora and fauna: crabs skitter down a beach, a pelican hovers atop a tree, a daisy blooms beneath the shade of forest branches. At the same time, the paintings may be read as colorful petri dishes filled with a melange of floating and glowing organic forms. Whether providing glimpses of vast or miniscule worlds, Prine’s compositions originate from natural forms, and are, ultimately about the growth of an image. Using basic formal information from nature, such as shape and contour, in conjunction with intuitive and unusual color combinations, Prine allows her compositions to grow and evolve organically. As such, this formal process results in new and unique images unfound in nature.
This will be Ashley Prine’s Chelsea solo debut. She is 28-years-old and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
