RL Fine Arts is pleased to present the exhibition Lines & Concavities, a project that manifests the gallery’s interest in expanding the horizon to include artists of Contemporary relevance.
Curated by Alberto Barral for Florencio Gelabert, a Contemporary Cuban-American artist working with sculpture and also presenting a selection of works on paper. The works illustrate the diverse nature of Gelabert’s oeuvre, from sculptures to drawings and illustrate his reaction to present concerns for environmental challenges.
Artists have always been aware, since the dawn of the industrial revolution, of its dangerous beauty. In Gelabert’s work, a whole new flora is flourishing in unlikely places: old fixtures, discarded construction materials, wooden beams. These new plants hold firmly onto the shiny surface of frozen polluted lakes and though they resemble known species the plasticized coloring betrays an interesting set of mutations to match a new age of genetic progression.
Gelabert’s work has appeared in museums, collections and public places around the country, in Latin America and in Europe. In 1999 a Latin-American tour exhibition, organized by Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Panama City, Panama; and then exhibited at Museo Jacobo Borges, Caracas, Venezuela between 1998 and 1999. And a personal exhibition of his work was organized by the Frost Museum of Art, FIU, Miami in 2009. Gelabert has also participated in the following biennials: Barro de America III and IV (Venezuela/Brasil) 1998 and 2001, Uppsala Biennial in Sweden ,2000, and last year at The (S) Files Biennial organized by El Museo del Barrio, NY. Gelabert’s drawings were selected for the EXQUISITE CORPSE project, an exhibition organized by the Paul Robeson Galleries at Rutgers University, NJ, USA, 2009. His work has been also exhibited at X AÑOS de TEOR/eTICA, Fundacion ARS TEOR/eTICA, San Jose, Costa Rica, 2009.
