Newman Popiashvili Gallery is pleased to present Riddlin Doors, the second solo exhibition at the gallery of Brooklyn-based artist Raúl deNieves. deNieves produces a disjointed space that plays on the dichotomy of black and white versus color by arranging his paintings, sculptures, drawings and collages in two distinct rooms.
Upon entering, there will stand a sculptured book whose blank white pages open into a floating sail. All in white, the book embodies the fairytale world of the artist. The space, which includes the book and surrounding 3-D collages, is rendered solely in black and white.
Like the Wizard of Oz, the shift in color palettes, from a graphic two-toned range to a multi-hued display of the fantastical and magical, creates a sense of disconnect and tension.
Replicating this cinematic effect, the artist builds out a narrow hallway in the gallery where a wall divides and acts a medium for the juxtaposition of spaces. A hidden door leads the viewer into the next area: a world in Technicolor.
Raúl deNieves was born in 1983 in Morelia Michuacan, Mexico and grew up in San Diego, Ca. deNieves’ first solo show, titled Beacha Beach Babies, was exhibited at Newman Popiashvili Gallery in 2007. In the summer of 2007 the artist performed at PS 1’s Summer Warm-Up and DUMBO Arts Under the Bridge Festival. deNieves also exhibited at Galerie Giti Nourbakhsch in Berlin in January 2008. deNieves’ upcoming shows include a group show titled, The Gods We Are, at Yautepec Gallery in Mexico City (August 2009). He will then follow with a show at Haas and Fischer (Zurich) in November 2009.
