“An illustrational form tells you through the intelligence immediately what the form is about, whereas a non-illustrational form works first upon sensation and then slowly leaks back into the fact.” – Mark Rothko
The title The Breathing Room describes the intimacy between the illustrative and formal visual art language, and its everchanging relevance in the contemporary art world. The works presented herein examine a balance on surface, between varied mediums, with introspect on the motif-based process.
Morgan Blair presents work grasping at the potency of retrospect and sentiment, created through obsessively transcribed planes of geometric shape, pattern, and color. Her intention is a dizzying visual experience that delivers the audience into a state akin to memories of rewinding a cassette tape.
Julian Lorber’s works include sculpture, mixed media, drawings and paintings. His new pieces involve multiple layers corresponding to gestural painting and illustration, yielding a dailogue between pen and picture plane are described with titles as The Real Illusions in Painting.
John Ryan Solis is infatuated with the challenging juxtapositions of the human form. By working with graphite and mixed media, he enjoys illustration action with elegance – a lasting characteristic even when his work turns sexual or grotesque. Inspired by design, fashion, sexuality and obsession, John’s pop-chic style offers a glimpse into his surreal perspective on his craft.
