Sue Scott Gallery is pleased to announce Unforeseen/Imprevisti, a solo exhibition of photographs by Paola Ferrario.

Ferrario searches for surprising details in the urbanized landscape and in cultural artifacts that have been subjected to the wear and tear of weather and usage. Arranging her accidental still lifes in rows and grids, she delights in visual coincidence—in coloristic and morphological resonances among unlike objects in unexpected configurations. Playful and often humorous, Ferrario’s layered and brilliantly chromatic images rescue their endlessly varied subjects from banal neglect. She thereby reaffirms the potential of the medium to attend intelligently to our material lives.

For this exhibition, Ferrario selects from some 450 photographs taken over the past three years in the U.S. and her native Italy, printed in various formats, along with a video, Gol di Grosso/Grosso’s Goal, shot on a road trip during the World Cup championship of 2006. A small catalogue with an essay by Jean Dykstra will accompany the exhibition.

Born in Rho, Italy, in 1963, Paola Ferrario earned a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from Yale University. Among other grants, she has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lange Taylor Prize and the Friends of Photography Emerging Photographer Award. Her photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth; the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, and others. She is presently the Harnish Visiting Artist in Photography at Smith College.
