Gonzalo Papantonakis weaves the written word, music, and abstract images together to create delicate cultural patchworks. His colorful works combine mixed media, rich imagery, and an expressionistic handling of form and line. Papantonakis spent his childhood between Uruguay and Argentina, before traveling extensively throughout Europe and the United States. These experiences are reflected in the themes of communication and language which recur throughout his art and add to their universal appeal.

Evocations of childhood and nature are strewn throughout Papantonakis’ canvases. His use of collage embeds layers of meaning in each work and produce vast tapestries of association. Self taught, many of his pieces are an homage created for people whom Papantonakis admires. Papantonakis draws his inspiration from a wide range of sources, such as composers Bob Marley, U2, and Antonio Vivaldi.

One of his signature techniques is the incorporation of sheet music into his canvases. Conveying a sense of rawness and fragility, Papantonakis’ works present the viewer with sound made visible. This confluence of the visual arts and music is central to his practice. Papantonakis has painstakingly developed this concept, which he has named See Music.

His works have been exhibited widely and are held in numerous private collections throughout the United States, Europe and South America.
