Pipedreams is a new body of work by British artist Alex Hoda (b.1980) and will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in the US. On display will be a series of reliefs and free standing figurative sculpture cast in resin.

Hoda’s practice is founded on the principle of re-working. Objects, styles and motifs are conflated within his frieze-like reliefs, his haunting dog heads or his arresting interpretation of the Washington War Memorial, produced in battleship grey. His tools are pre-fabricated objects: toys, miniatures and fancy dress accoutrements – meshed together and unified through the casting process.

Hoda’s sculpture is imbued with a fetishistic aesthetic, achieved primarily through his sleek, rubber-like surfaces as well as his use of masks, chains and pipes. These inanimate objects are given renewed energy and connotative power through the artist’s seemingly inflatable compositions. As John Richardson, Picasso’s esteemed biographer comments in a recent interview with the artist: “Amazingly you have managed to endow Halloween and sex shop paraphernalia with neo-classical gravitas as well as the pop music of the Whoopee cushion.”

Hoda graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts London in 2008. Recent solo exhibitions include University of the Arts London; Metro 5 Gallery, Melbourne and Royal British Sculpture Society, London. Recent group shows include CCA Andratx, Mallorca and Allsopp Contemporary, London. Hoda lives and works in London.
