Gridspace.10

PICK

Gridspace
112 Rogers Avenue
Brooklyn Misc.
October 31 - November 30, 2009
Reception: Saturday, October 31, 5 - 9 PM

The purpose of GRIDSPACE is to provide an architecturally and sculpturally specific curatorial outlet that engages the rapidly changing neighborhood of northern Crown Heights. The non-traditional storefront gallery is in the front window of Charles Goldman’s studio—POWELL. The “space” itself is a wooden grid of 12 individually lit 2 foot square by 8 inch deep “cubicles,” custom built to fit into the specially designed storefront.

The inaugural exhibition – GRIDSPACE.10—is a yearlong exhibition (through 2010, GRIDSPACE.11 follows in 2011) involving 12 solo and 1 group show (which will include works by the initial 12 artists.) The year will begin with the group exhibition. There will be a “real time” website and an informal catalogue to mark the completion of each cycle. Unscheduled programming will continue in the space throughout the year. The solo exhibitions will be as long or as short as deemed necessary by each participant.

GRIDSPACE is open during the receptions for each exhibition, where it exists as an expanded exhibition space. The exhibition continues to be visible through the window of the storefront gallery for the allotted period of time, 24 hours a day.

GRIDSPACE.10 will include solo exhibitions by Mark Essen, Amanda Wojick, Micah Lexier, The Reanimation Library, Allyson Strafella, Elk, Theater of the Two Headed Calf, Jason Middlebrook, Bob Seng / Lisa Hein, Kathryn Spence, TRYST and Alix Lambert.

The inaugural exhibition will include one work by each invited artist. It opens on Saturday, October 31, 2009 from 5 to 9 during an opening reception that will double as the public inauguration of POWELL. It will remain on view in the window through November. There will be a special banner project by Charles Beronio and a cleansing performance / installation by Stephanie Diamond. Live music by BNDL, Forma and White Hills will be provided. As will beer.
