1013 Grand Street is an amalgam of creative expression, a community bound by a commitment to exploration of media and process. On Friday, November 6th and Sunday, November 8th, we will open our industrial metal doors to the public. Over fifty artists will be participating in the event, many of them engaged in an interdisciplinary practice.

Benjamin Finer is an artist who deftly applies his florescent pop-art sensibility to a multitude of media: tiny eyeball sculptures, large mixed media collages and drawings, and tiny post-apocalyptic machines made from brass and silver will be on display in his studio. Similarly disturbing yet humorous, the collage paintings of Jesse McCloskey are heavy with layers of intricately cut paper and rich with color and line. Just down the hall, Billy Copley is also working with a collage technique, however the colors here are bright and airy, creating intricate and abstracted biomorphic forms that call to mind memories of a 1950’s childhood. Jessica Hargreaves and Kelly Sturhahn apply traditional painting techniques to psychological concepts—Hargreaves depicts other’s dreams or nightmares in dense, dark color, while Sturhahn’s light washes of ink are dreamy depictions of a city dweller in search of refuge in nature. Bettina Johae also seeks solace in traversing the city, however her conceptual approach is through mapping 14th Street in Manhattan through the narratives of the people who live and work there. A moment of respite for the overwhelmed viewer can be found among the labyrinth of collective spaces in Splinters and Logs, at the “ethno botanical salon,” hosted by installation artist Matthew C. Wilson, where various herbal concoctions from around the globe will be served.
