Sopheap Pich is Cambodia’s most prominent contemporary artist. This autumn, Tyler Rollins Fine Art is proud to host his first New York solo exhibition, The Pulse Within.
Pich works primarily with bamboo and rattan to create free-flowing, biomorphic sculptures and installations. His works address issues of time, memory, and the body, often relating to his childhood recollections of life during and after the Khmer Rouge period. For The Pulse Within, Pich creates sculptural forms derived from bodily organs – the heart, lungs, intestines – that function as visceral reminders of the past and of the intimate, physical connections between human beings.
Pich has been very active on the international scene. This year, he is participating two of Asia’s most prestigious art events: the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale in Fukuoka, Japan; and the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane, Australia. He has also recently completed a major sculptural installation at the King Abdullah University in Saudi Arabia.
