Blank Space presents “Preview 2010,” a sneak peek of 6 artists who will be exhibiting at Blank Space in the upcoming year: Nuala Clarke, Cathy Daley, Jonny Detiger, Damara Kaminecki, Susan Schwalb, and Douglas Witmer. Seeing their work together allows for a lively visual dialogue that highlights the different approaches each artists takes towards color, materials and subject matter. “Preview 2010” runs from December 10th, 2009 through January 9th, 20010. Join us for our opening reception and holiday party December 10th from 6:00-8:00pm.
Nuala Clarke’s delicate line drawings on polypropylene bring to mind the grain of wood, as well as the intricate curvilinearity of topographical maps. Cathy Daley’s work examines fairy-tale iconography, Hollywood films, Barbie doll fashions, and ballerina costumes as points of reference for her work. Jonny Detiger’s series of portraits is a tongue in cheek exploration of public personas such as Ben Bernanke and Farrah Fawcett. Damara Kaminecki is inspired by the diversity of Chicago’s bustling cityscape, which she examines during her contemplative bicycle rides. Susan Schwalb uses the Renaissance technique of silverpoint in her Moments series. Douglas Witmer’s oil paintings depict emphatically colorful, simple geometric shapes on subtly manipulated surfaces.
