Living Room Gallery is pleased to present a selection of abstract oils by Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh, the young, b. 1977, Irish painter’s first New York exhibit opens Tuesday January 5th. Ní Mhaonaigh builds vast generic spaces, proscenium like constructions, arenas and stages within an easel-sized canvas. The open architecture provides formal scaffolding for her lush, casual paint handling. Austere yet richly colored, scraped and layered – the paintings have a deceptive simplicity. Ní Mahaonaigh places the viewer at the edges and borders of an undefined space- an interval or gap- merging the performative with the philosophical. These intelligent explorations of the fundamentals of abstraction expand and transcend the basics.
She is represented by Kevin Kavanagh Gallery in Dublin and most recently exhibited in Ireland at the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Wexford and the Galway Arts Centres and was short listed for the 2009 AIB art prize.
