Terra Infirma gathers the works of six internationally renowned artists, exploring the ways in which emotions can be affected by a geographical context. Addressing feelings of melancholy and sorrow, the exhibition tentatively links attempts to interact with, modify and understand natural phenomena, landscapes and geographical codifications with the subtle and ephemeral emotional dimension of human existence.

As both a system of classification and a mode of location, geography appears to be more than just a site for global, collective, national, political and economical relations, or a simple matter of positions and boundaries connected to power. Rather, geography is an epistemic structure, a vision of the world, an existential scenario where identities and emotions take form, where local conditions actually affect our sensitivity.

How do we really feel when living on a disappearing island or when witnessing the relentless succession of nights and days, of darkness and light? The works on display suggest a variety of approaches: they connect scientific notions and imaginary representations, propose idea of time and space both real and fictional, touch upon utopian theories and prediction scenarios. All of them connect with daily experience, human ongoing struggles and with the deepest emotional universe.

Chiara Sartori is a curator-in-residence at ISCP.
