The exhibition includes a new series of family portraits focusing on hands to express relationships which transcend the politics of race, religion and gender.
Since 2006 Gwyneth Leech has been working on a project called Perfect Families, painting portraits of alternative and mixed race families, primarily her friends and neighbors in New York City. She sees these real people as archetypes for the contemporary American family at a time when mixed race families, trans-racial adoption and above all, same sex marriage and parenting continue to challenge assumptions about societal norms.
Her most recent paintings focus almost exclusively on hands and gestures to express relationships which transcend the politics of race, religion and gender.
