Curator Stephen Paul selects four artists to showcase a wide and wild range of figurative art. Painting without models to distract from her subconscious imagery, Buckley’s deft hand for the gesture conjures alarming and gorgeous figures that resonate like icons in a weird place of worship. Laranger’s fleshy figures drip grace and violence with biomorphic strangeness and fearsome beauty. Smith’s masterful painting of beach-goers evokes the sparkling beauty of a Whitman scene replete with gleaming wet skin at the shoreline. Layered with hints of pattern, Bornstein’s understated paintings allow color fields to take over while the figure all but hides within it.
