Chelsea

Reception: Thursday, September 8, 6 - 8 PM
Web Site

For 10 years, Danica Phelps has been documenting and drawing her life, using a monetary (and later erotic) system to provide parameters and guidelines for her drawings. Instead of focusing on her whole life as in the past, Wake spends months studying a very small part of it: the process of waking each morning. This show consists of 36 drawings of Danica taking a shower and getting ready for the day. In addition to the shower drawings, she will be exhibiting 20 drawings that each document one week of her life, with detailed documentation of money, time and making love. All of these shower and week-long drawings will be installed directly on top of tracings of drawings that where exhibited in her last show. The tracings will be installed as closely as possible to the way they where installed in her 2003 show Integrating Sex into Every Day Life.

In the second gallery space, Phelps will be exhibiting a book, drawings and a text from the project Writer’s Trade. In this project, Phelps asked writers to trade a text about a subject found in her work, not about her work itself. In exchange, the writers were able pick a drawing of their choosing. This is Phelps’ third trade project. The first was a trade with Brooklyn artists and the second was a trade with artists in LFL Gallery’s flat files. The book Writer’s Trade is published by Grinnell College.
