Encompassing traditions that range from documentary to abstraction, Hey, Hot Shot! 2009 Second Edition presents a diverse view of contemporary photography. Marisa Aragona’s cluttered portraits blur her subjects’ identities and become a study of the search for one’s self. In her photographs of an isolated treatment center for boys in Upstate New York, Leah Tepper Byrne compassionately reveals what it’s like to be young and confined. Alejandro Cartagena examines the causes and effects of development and suburban sprawl in Monterrey, Mexico. Jessica Eaton manipulates light, space and time to create images that unfold as experiments in process. Justin James King intervenes with common perceptions of the American landscape, questioning whether what we see is simply a reflection of what we’ve been taught to anticipate.
