Winston Wächter Fine Art, New York, is pleased to announce its first solo show with photographer Margeaux Walter. Walter has long been interested in questions of identity and individuality in modern society. Using her own image in digital photographs and lenticulars (a printing process that creates an image that moves or shifts with the movement of the viewer), she has explored the impact of technology, or, more to the point, society’s growing dependence on technology— a trend from which she is certainly not immune.

In this new series, she manufactures images of crowds in familiar scenarios— a graduation ceremony, ballgame, concert, and cocktail party to name a few. The crowds are composed, in some cases, of dozens of images of Walter herself performing the different characters and clichés with the help of wigs, costumes and makeup. Walter is a people watcher who has honed her skills as a longtime resident of New York City. With the Crowded series, she zeroes in on the struggle for individuality that emerges in the context of a crowd, alongside the conflicting desire for anonymity. This is exemplified by Walter’s photograph Sunday Afternoon, where, as in its Seurat predecessor, people are at once physically together and emotionally isolated.
