Works Progress: A Recession Art Show will exhibit 12 artists who are working with little money, but great talent.
The 12 Works Progress artists are Megan Berk, Amanda Boulton, Zach Chupa, Julie Floersch, Emily François, Katerie Gladdys, Angela Jann, Jonathan Kambouris, Ian Trask, Cubby West, Alison Wilder, and Shawn Yu. Each piece has a $500 price limit and includes everything from paintings to installation sculpture to interactive art. Emily François will show dollar store commemorative plates and Amanda Boulton will explore how we relate to wealth with money-themed shrines. Repurposing material waste, Ian Trask builds trash art sculptures and Cubby West paints on salvaged car parts. Organic life in urban worlds flourishes through Katerie Gladdys’ edible weeds documented in urban Florida and Jonathon Kambouris’ portraits of vegetable and fruit decay. Angela Jann will work with a realtor at the opening reception to sell homes being sold in Detroit for under $500, as well as paintings of those homes, to see whether the art or housing market is suffering the most.
Works Progress is the third exhibit presented by Recession Art, an organization devoted to helping emerging artists show and sell their work while giving art lovers and collectors opportunities to buy original work at reasonable prices. Recession Art is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit organization that serves a national community of artists and arts organizations.
