If You’re Feeling Sinister, a song and album title by Scottish collaborative band Belle & Sebastian, is the inspiration for this group show. The artwork exhibited will attempt to parallel this band’s musical techniques: their melodies are lilting and infectious; the delicate voice of the lead singer resonates as sad and painfully sincere while his humorous lyrics are startling and sardonic. The seemingly happy-go-lucky pop sound of their music radically contrasts with the profoundly real and poignantly dark lyrics. Like Belle & Sebastian, the artwork concerns itself with interweaving beauty and seduction with an underbelly of menace and dark humor.
