The Painting Center presents New Walls/Fresh Paint, an exhibition that celebrates sixteen years of outreach and visual dialogue among painters at the Center’s original location—52 Greene Street—and heralds a promising future at its new space: 547 West 27th Street. This exhibition includes the work of forty- six past and present Painting Center artists: Philip Ayers, Brett Baker, Emily Berger, Alison Berry, Riley Brewster, Robert Bunkin, Doug Canfield, Melissa Chaney, Ryan Cobourn, Jane Culp, Kate Davis, Cathy Diamond, Raffaele D’Onofrio, Geoffrey Dorfman, Tina Eisenbeis, Gwen Fabricant, Matthew Farina, David Fratkin, Carmela Kolman, Mark LaRiviere, Lisa Lawley, Don Lewallen, Ying Li, Sarah Lutz, Craig Manister, Jenny Lynn McNutt, Mark O’Grady, Andrea Packard, Carrie Patterson, Carl Plansky, Bosiljka Raditsa, Susan Ross, Anne Russinof, Marilyn Schleife, Edward Shalala, David Sharpe, Kim Sloane, Rella Stuart-Hunt, Laura Taylor, Shazzi Thomas, Lisa Warren, Patrick Webb, Susan Wilmarth, Douglas Wirls, Rachael Wren, and Elizabeth Yamin.

The Painting Center, a non–profit organization managed by artists, was founded in April 1993 by twelve painters who saw the urgent need for an exhibition space devoted entirely to painting. Seventeen years later, the Painting Center is gaining new vitality and momentum by joining the Chelsea art scene. The Center’s newly renovated space and more visible location will allow for more ambitious and engaging exhibitions featuring both established artists and rising talent.

The Center mounts approximately twenty exhibitions per year—programming that celebrates the high standards of excellence to be found in the work of both emerging and established artists. At its Chelsea location, The Painting Center will continue to offer a vital gathering place for painters and others who love painting—a democratic arena that fosters dialogue, experimentation, and community among artists. Guest-curated exhibitions as well as solo or small group presentations will continue to be accompanied by catalogs, panel discussions, lectures, readings, and other educational programming.
