GALLERI 144 is pleased to present Stone Drawing by Maiko Fukuoka. This will be the gallery’s inaugural exhibition.

To prepare for this show, I produced my own crayons. It was difficult to make the thin, narrow crayon shape found in art stores. As I molded the material in my hands, they become rounded like rice cakes. I call these “the color of stones”. I will use these handmade crayons to draw on paper on the gallery floor. Although drawing with these crayons on the floor will be a new experiment, for me it represents a return to the roots meaning of drawing and art making. In the confines of this narrow space, I will draw on that initial impulse, to make a mark, and allow the shape of that energy to emerge._ —Maiko Fukuoka 04/2010

Maiko Fukuoka was born in 1981 in Kyoto, Japan. She studied at Kyoto Seika University in Kyoto, Japan. She has had solo exhibition at the Gallery Yamaguchi Kunst-Bau, Osaka, Japan (2009), Atelier 2001, Hyogo,Japan (2008), and Gallery Yamaguchi Kunst-Bau (2007).

GALLERI 144 is a 3’x46’ project space gallery founded by Eri Hirano. Hirano studied architecture and art at Osaka Art University and worked at Gallery Yamaguchi Kunst-Bau in Japan. She is interested in the intersection of art and architecture. She opened this project space as a way of collaborating and evolving with artists. With each new collaboration, the project will change as the process evolves. Curiosity and play are the only requirements and the only goals.
