Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center is pleased to present Heterotopia, a group exhibition based on individualized photographic investigations of mainly architectural spaces, or perhaps non-spaces, shifting peripheries of place through time, and the general absence of figure driven imagery. These documents of spaces—sometimes personal, sometimes public— are intended to serve, function and contain meaning that is both literal, and at the same time, illusory. The images in this show act as representations of a collective definition of the ideas put forth by Michel Foucault, especially the notion of metaphorical place acting as a mirror of real space…

Through a series of discussions and critiques, the photographers represented in this exhibition set out to cultivate their own definition of Foucault’s term, yet sought a connectivity not only to Foucault’s theories, but also to each others’ work in which the collection of images aim to be in dialogue with one another. Some of the subject matter chosen reflects public spaces such as parks and cemeteries, atriums in buildings, personal space as transition zones, and spaces of exclusion
