The Painting Center is proud to present Open-In, an exhibition of works by Seattle-based painter Kimberly Trowbridge. This selection of paintings combines abstract and figurative works that express the particular poetics of an internal space. Sometimes the space alone creates an analogy of experience— a box, a house, a window, the canvas. In other works, the space acts as a container, holding the potential means for narrative: a figure, a curtain, a letter, a hand.

For Trowbridge, painting is a way of making visible the hidden story of the mind.

Kimberly Trowbridge received a BFA from Indiana University and an MFA from University of Washington. She is a current instructor and lecturer at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle.

Her exhibitions include a recent solo show, Self as Subject, at the Steele Gallery, Gage Academy of Art, and concurrent public lecture, The Picture Plane is a Mirror. In 2008 she received a smART ventures award from the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs to help support her solo show, Self Reflect, at Grey Gallery, Seattle. She has participated in numerous group shows at galleries including Roots and Culture Contemporary Art Center in Chicago, and The Painting Center in NYC. She was the featured artist on the cover of the West Coast Drawings: Drawings VIII 2009 catalog for the exhibition at Koplin Del Rio Gallery in Culver City, CA. Open-In is Kimberly Trowbridge’s first solo show in New York City.
