Seven newly minted artists – hailing from across the globe – emerge from their two-year incubation in Providence, where they survived miscellaneous adventures in sculpture and video. During their tenure at RISD, this group of seven worked to expand and re-interpret the idea of the object within a contemporary context. Their work- deals with a wide variety of concepts including architectural investigation, social commentary, mythology, alchemy, and the marketplace. Even with their diverse practices, a sense of camaraderie and commonality emerges. A strong sense of earnestness and authorship leads to a serious interest in the renewed significance of object-hood in sculpture. Accordingly, the figure has become a prevalent theme in the work, whether through its presence or through its absence.
