It is said that the end of the Cold War began when Gorbachev and Reagan convened a summit in Reykjavik in October, 1986.
Signal In The Heavens is a curatorial project, conceived in Reykjavik nearly one generation following that summit. The artists, working in diverse contemporary media, represent the last generation to have first-hand account of the divided Cold War environment. Their inspiration is drawn from this unique sensibility. Music of the period, especially that of Leonard Cohen, also figures in to their inspiration.
Gallery Boreas in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is hosting a three-part exhibit of Signal In The Heaven, Purgatory, from October, 2004 to June, 2005. For many of these young European artists it will be their North American and New York debut.
