Metro Pictures presents Andreas Hofer, ON TIME by Andy Hope 1930, an exhibition of painting and sculpture that channels the evidence of art as a ghostly manifestation in a mystic time and space.

Central to the exhibition are Hofer’s Time Tubes. These sculptures present an empty picture frame as the portal to infinite space. Peering through the frame into the “black hole” of the open ended box and infinite space recalls Hofer’s fascination with science fiction and Malevich’s black squares.

Hofer’s austere and beautifully surfaced paintings are based on imagery from his 2008 Phantom Gallery exhibitions in Los Angeles and Zürich. These shows presented empty rooms with visible evidence of vanished paintings and objects on the walls and floors. Painted in creams and beiges they reflect the ghostly walls of the installations. A room of paintings in shades of gray are Hofer’s response to the black and white photographs of those exhibitions, investing the original objects with another layer of removal from their original existence.

The final gallery presents a three-dimensional painting and a Star Trek multi-level chess set as a readymade sculpture. These works embody Hofer’s fascination with thinking and existing in numerous dimensions.

Andreas Hofer was born in Munich in 1963 and lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include the Charles Riva Collection, Brussels; The Freud Museum, London; and Sammlung Goetz, Munich. His work has recently been included in exhibitions at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie, Regensburg; Kunstverein Braunschweig, Germany; and the ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe.
