Reaves Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Interior Situations, an exhibition by Kenneth Browne.

Advances in entertainment and the added influences of cinema and videogames affect our perception of how we relay stories. Using the rapidly advancing technical changes, stories have taken on a fragmented nature to provide the viewer a sense of the whole without full disclosure. This fragmentation delivers a quick understanding of the situation which is in complete opposition to the process of creating a painting. A painter delivers his story over a longer period of time so the viewer can associate with not only the image but the journey of the artist.

Browne creates paintings and drawings based on his experiences in New York City. Having lived in Brooklyn for the past five years, Browne noticed the increase of modern condo buildings which do not fit with the local décor. Watching these buildings practically rise up overnight begged the question, what kind of people live in these buildings? The works are cinematic in nature and focus on the relationship of the characters using implied movement as his vehicle of communication.

Browne creates a situation where the viewer is forced to watch from outside of the picture plane. Reinforcing the idea that each fragment is part of a larger story, Browne allows the viewer to speculate on the future outcome of the situation. The works are created in a realistic style to allow the viewer to experience every aspect of the scene. Ultimately, the paintings tell a story and express ideas about our past, present, and future.

Kenneth Donald Browne III was born in Hempstead, NY and received his Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in 2007. He lives and works in Brooklyn. He has shown in New York, Maryland, DC, Kansas, Philadelphia, and Indiana.
