Ana Cristea Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of new paintings by Budapest-based artist Zsolt Bodoni. For this, his second solo show in New York, Bodoni leads the viewer into a strange landscape that hovers between a super-charged reality and a fantastic, mythical realm. Over the past few years, the young artist has gained a reputation for his dramatic and moving paintings that investigate the instruments of power and political ideology. Yet while this exhibition demonstrates Bodoni’s continued fascination with the idea of the architectural monument and its troubling implications for society, it also reveals that he has moved beyond the dark, grey backdrops synonymous with Eastern Europe under communism. This body of work pulses with the energy of a rich, vibrant palette and allows the mythological to sit alongside the historical in Bodoni’s dynamic and colorful grounds.
