571 Projects is pleased to announce an exhibition of new mixed media works on paper by Sally Gil. This is Gil’s first show with the gallery.

Working with collaged materials from a variety of print media, Gil’s abstract landscapes are documents of appropriation, re-contextualized through the filter of her intuitive practice. Drawn to archetypes and patterns, her work references the universe and instances of genesis.

On top of her collaged surface, Gil paints out large areas, in effect editing with black or white. Taking cues from the remaining fragments she draws repetitious details with ink and brush, into patterns of her own devising. Here the mass-produced stands in for that which was traditionally considered women’s work: paper doilies and images of flowers reference handiwork and gardening. She works to deconstruct these elements thereby creating “a sort of logical truth”, the foundation for entirely new narratives.

Gil grew up in Vermont and received her BA from UCSD and her MFA at Hunter College. She has been a Visiting Artist at UNC at Charlotte, The University of Tennessee (Knoxville) and SUNY Potsdam. Her group shows include, The Brooklyn Museum, White Columns, The Rotunda Gallery, and Pierogi, and has solo shows at the University of North Carolina (Charlotte, NC), The Dean Bergen Gallery (Brooklyn, NY).
