Sarah E. Wood’s first solo exhibition at Kate Werble Gallery, Tilt, presents four new sculptures. Elegant, black, rhythmic and spare, the works that make up this exhibition are simple gestures tracing lines through suspended form.

Tilt explores ideas of line, weight and gravity through the manipulation of few materials and the specific placement of each object. In preparation for the work in this show, Wood started “thinking about the particular gravity of a necklace on a person’s body, building a line in space as a way of emphasizing shifts in weight.” Untitled (Necklace) uses fine metal chain and welded steel to create three suspended passageways from ceiling to floor. The two, very different materials form a continuous line.

Wood rigorously limits her materials and creates a distinct, restricted vocabulary. Untitled (Broken Lines) 2010, a work in six parts, descends from the wall to the floor in interrupted lines of string and steel as if in the process of falling or unfolding. The piece has an aggressive presence but, physically, it is barely there. Wood’s precise and measured approach allows for vast complexity through an economy of means.

Sarah E. Wood was born in Beckley, WV in 1976. She received a B.F.A. from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1999 and an M.F.A. in 2001 from Rutgers University. Her work has been shown in exhibitions throughout the U.S. including the Regina Gouger Miller Gallery, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, P.S. 122, New York, NY, the NADA Art Fair Miami Beach, and Art in General, New York, NY as well as a two person show at Kate Werble Gallery, New York, New York. Wood currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

This is the fourth solo exhibition at Kate Werble Gallery.
