Where do the lines of aesthetic identity and social complexity meet? How do we choose to create and also present our perspective in the world of art? As an artist frames their work with a particular concept or physical perspective, they gain the power to more specifically usher the viewer into the fold of their ideas. If we approach this from an ontological perspective, drawing on the words of Joseph Campbell, our power is dependent on our vision reaching a point of total balance, our mind following the sight of our third eye, “from which the universe can be perfectly regarded, the still-standing point of disengagement around which all things turn.”
The artists in this show are connected by a sharp use of color, geometry and psychic suggestion. Fractal worlds burst open into colorful landscapes and mounds of referential figuration. Maximal allegories of battles fought, won and lost are re-imagined into peaceful societies of thought and of flame. The playthings of childhood morph into monsters who shout with full mouths at the hypocrisy of time.
Your Third Eye is a Dictator brings together a group of artists working in diverse media to present a body of work that both defines and defies the character of the third eye.
