Comprising three entirely new bodies of painted works, one of them a polyptych of collaborative pieces conceived as the exhibit’s theme and aesthetic took shape, Marksmen and the Palimpsests showcases the most recent yields of the rigorously process-laden and precision-driven studio practices of John Avelluto and Josh Willis.
At once a celebration and an acute investigation of these painters’ similarly discerning methodologies and the readily differentiable innovations resulting therefrom, Marksmen and the Palimpsests is quite literally, indeed eponymously, an exploration of the variable palpability of exactitude, on the one hand, and layering, on the other.
The exhibit catalogue, designed by Karilyn Johanesen, features curatorial and critical essays by Paul D’Agostino, Alice Lynn McMichael and Steve Weintraub, as well as complete sets of photographs for all works and a selection of supporting images.
