The Nancy Margolis Gallery is pleased to announce the third solo exhibit, Dark Matter, featuring Swedish artist Eva Hild.

Hild constructs complex sculptures made of stoneware clay, fired and coated with white silicate in a process that takes four to six months to complete. These sculptures, delicate and ethereal are hand constructed with clay coils followed by a painstaking sanding process. In the last year Hild expanded her work with a darker clay body. These deep dark sculptures, still with thin walls and equally forceful, elicit their own distinct aura.

Each of Hild’s sculptures engages with the space around it in a dynamic relationship that allows the work to be both compressed and supported by the surrounding space. Each sculpture not only brings attention to its own form but also the air and emptiness around it. The form comprises of both internal and external surfaces as one line continuously runs throughout and emphasizes the tension between presence and absence, space and mass, light and shade, and construction and destruction. Challenging herself further, Hild is currently working on large-scale outdoor sculptures cast in aluminum and stainless steel. The commissioned sculptures are installed in South Korea, and a number of locations in Sweden.

Hild lives and work in Sweden where she received her MFA from the University of Gothenburg. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, namely the 2007 Visual Art Fund grant, 2005 Special Prize at the World Ceramic Biennale, Korea, and the 2003 Sten A. Olsson Fund for Science and Culture. Her work can be found in public and private collections including Museum of Arts and Design, New York, Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Japan, Museum of Contemporary Ceramics, Shanghai, Mint Museum, North Carolina, National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo, National Museum, Stockholm, and Boras Art Museum.
