Aperture Foundation, in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Culture, proudly announces The Spanish National Photography Prize: Connections and Confrontations, a group exhibition exploring Spain’s photographic history and changing creative identity over the last sixty years. Displayed together for the first time in the United States, over sixty-five works by fifteen Spanish photographers—each a recipient of the Ministry of Culture’s esteemed Spanish National Photography Prize—illuminate the evolution of Spanish photographic art, captured through the lenses of some of the nation’s most respected artists.

Organized by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and curated by Carmen de la Guerra and Javier Díez from Artendencias, Connections and Confrontations examines connective threads that have tied Spanish photography together over the last six decades. The retrospective demonstrates the diversity and depth of Spanish photography, cleverly piecing together a significant part of its artistic history, set against the backdrop of a country in the midst of its own remarkable metamorphosis.

The show’s highlights include an impressive and eclectic cast of artists, including pioneers Juan Colom, Cristina García Rodero and Carlos Pérez Siquier alongside newer wave photographers such as Joan Fontcuberta, Chema Madoz, and Alberto García Alix, among others. Collectively, their work reveals the surprising links between multiple generations of Spanish artists, and reflects one nation’s photographic transformation over the last half-century.
