Y Gallery is pleased to present Square Peg, Round Hole, the first solo exhibition of New York based collective Gutbox curated by Cecilia Jurado. Gutbox is a collaborative effort consisting of nine New York based artists, and an open-ended number of ‘visiting’ participants, was founded in early 2010. With a mission to create running narrative threads through collective participation, the members of Gut Box weave disjointed stories that don’t suffer the absolution of a beginning or an end. By incorporating panels that are under the influence of at least two members before completion, the group allows a film reel like format to take shape without giving way to a truly linear sequence. The result is a vivid display of painterly cooperation that meets naked trust and invention.

Gutbox was born to fall into art as an experimental practice that we can find in other collectives through the history of art. Where an artist gives up its initial idea in order to be transform by the next is the only key. In some works, like ‘Late Night Ideas’ and ‘Revolution’, Moore creates a structural underdrawing for a portrait. Ulrike Theusner then inks whimsical imagery into Moore’s drawing, such as frogs jumping out of hair or strange children in masks chanting for a revolution. The materials used are very diverse as are the references. The Gutbox experience allows each artist to move outside of his/her branded process and explore raw creativity without the grips of set and salable modes of working.

Gutbox members: are: Nick Dyball, John J. Hagan, Jazzminh Moore, Ray Sell, Heather Hart, Seth Mulvey, Caroline Thaw, Ulrike Theusner and Thomas Witte.
