Mark Stillwell’s works are relief painting/installations constructed from cardboard, paper mache and various materials from 99-cent stores. Stillwell’s installations take the form of invading armies of creatures amongst urban neighborhoods. Stemming from an obsession with monster movies, Japanese animation, and comic books, Stillwell has created an enormous installation entitled Doomsday Machine #2. He has shown extensively in Brooklyn and Manhattan, has been the recipient of a fellowship grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and has recently been included in such prestigious exhibitions as the Working in Brooklyn show at the Brooklyn Museum.
Nathan Vincent’s work explores gender permissions and the challenges that arise from straying from the prescribed norms. It questions the qualities of gender by considering what constitutes masculine and feminine. Vincent’s work critiques stereotypical gender mediums by creating “masculine objects” using “feminine processes” such as crochet, sewing and appliqué. For this show Vincent has created a hunting lodge atmosphere with an array of various crocheted and mounted trophies.
