Raandesk Gallery is pleased to announce Jennifer Murray’s first solo exhibition, Displaced Fables/Damaged Dreams, of drawings, mixed media and installation work, on view from January 13 – March 5, 2011. The show will feature a collection of her charcoal drawings on stretched paper, mixed media works with sewn fabric on canvas and hanging installation pieces.

Displaced Fables/Damaged Dreams carries a unique sense of humor that plays into an expressive fable of Murray’s imagination. A tale being told through Murray’s displaced characters, often wolves and cougars, playfully impersonating the human subconscious. The energy of these fierce animals resonants from their white backgrounds onto a three dimensional plane with strings and fabric attached to the canvas. The drawings not featuring fabrics display even more emotionally charged animation showing Murray’s skill as an artist in her accurate depiction of the wild beyond.

It is a recurring theme of displaced people and animals shown throughout her work that provides the viewer with a comical story of Murray’s personal reflection on societal subjects. Murray creates these dreamlike scenarios in which the subjects confront a logical disconnect between themselves and their surroundings. Murray, while encouraging the viewer to react to her drawings and make their own interpretation of these images also reflects her own personal feelings, struggles and desires.

Murray, a graduate from Carnegie Mellon University, graduated from the College of Fine Arts with a Bachelors in Fine Arts and an additional major in Social and Cultural History. She has produced a series of work that promote the social issues she has studied in school while also engaging in personal reflection.
