Rachel Uffner Gallery presetnts Offset Summary, a group exhibition of works by Kathryn Andrews, Zak Kitnick, Yves Klein, Mary Simpson, and Simpson/Meade.

Towards the back of Rachel Uffner Gallery, a canny viewer might spot a faint rectangular impression on the plaster of one of the space’s sidewalls. This is a covered-over remnant of Lawrence Weiner’s 1968 piece, A 36’’x 36’’ Removal to the Lathing or Support Wall of Plaster or Wallboard from a Wall, which was once on display at Orchard, in the same space Uffner’s gallery now occupies. The idea of reconfiguration and spatial intervention – a hallmark of conceptual art, as well as of institutional critique – is central to this exhibition.

The Lawrence Weiner piece, now an uncanny transplant, reminds us of how objects once embedded with certain properties and meaning can reactivate a space through spatial or material shifts. The artists in this exhibition share (each in their distinct way) an interest in a type of visual and substantive displacement. Beginning with familiar objects and imagery, they proceed to upend our expectations of how various media, and objects in general, perform in space.

Kathryn Andrews’ recent exhibitions include a solo show at Galerie Christian Nagel, Berlin, Germany and a four person show at David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles, CA. She is currently included in “How Soon Now” at the Rubell Family Collection, Miami, FL. She lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Zak Kitnick was recently included in shows at PS1 MoMA, Long Island City, NY, CCS Bard Hessel Museum, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, Landings Project Space, Oslo, Norway, and Cleopatra’s, Brooklyn, NY. He has an upcoming solo exhibition at Johan Berggren Gallery, Malmo, Sweden. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Yves Klein (1928-1962) was a French artist whose work included painting, sculpture, performance, photography, and printed matter. There is currently a survey of his work entitled “With the Void, Full Powers” at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN which originated at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC.

Mary Simpson has shown at the Seattle Art Museum, the Boise Art Museum, The Kitchen, New York, NY, and CAM2 Madrid, Spain. She received her MFA from Columbia University and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program in 2010.

Simpson/Meade (Mary Simpson and Fionn Meade) have collaborated on film and video projects since 2005, including a recent solo exhibition “Young Americans” at the Seattle Art Museum. Fionn Meade is also a curator and writer.
